This is a great video reference analysis software that I translated its UI into Turkish some time ago. I think it is widely used by sports industry but it is definitely very valuable for animators too. Peanuts pencil tests

A new movie, named "Happiness is a warm blanket, Charlie Brown" will come out on March 29th. It is not a feature length movie, it has 46 min running time and won't be in theathers, only on DVD&Blu-ray but it's something nonetheless. I love Peanuts, probably both because i had some of its comic books during my childhood (a nostalgic approach) and love the mannerisms of the characters, distinct designs/animations of a well-established world and of course the funny plot that is very contrasted through the characters' general calmness.

Also, I should mention that I have seen the movie recently. It was a good sequel film just like the previous one. Considering the fact that it is extra hard to make a satisfactory sequel for the audience, we can say that the Pixar team has done a very good job again. Nevertheless, Ratatouille still remains as my favourite Pixar movie.

I have textured the guy according to the tutorial. I have also rigged the character with an auto-rigging solution. It is an easy process but it takes time to get used to it; defining exclusion sets, adjusting widgets etc. If I can learn a little bit lighting and facial-rigging, off I go to building my set, converting my designs into cg and finishing my short.

I'm trying to learn character modeling in Maya through a digital tutors title: Creating cartoon characters. Well, I'm in favor of specializing only at animation and always trying to improve myself by doing animation tests but modeling is a bit necessity when it comes to customizing characters, modeling props, getting more familiar with the 3d software; whether you're making a short film or a small animation test. I'll try to learn a little bit lighting and rendering too if I can finish texturing the character, which seems as a little bit tedious process according to the videos.

This is a short that I prepared for the annecy youtube contest. It is my first 2d animation. I think the idea/story was good, but just not very well executed due to the lack of experience&technique. The bad parts are: I tried to keep the character alive by drawing similar poses during the holds but they were too many and caused lots of wobbling. The connection between sequences aren't that good. Same for some of the jumping animations. Also, I shouldn't have placed same jump patterns one after another. I didn't bother much with music and sounds so they are not appealing as well. But it was a good experience in terms of motivating myself and getting used drawing on tablet pc, which may help me later in planning my cg shots.
In conclusion, as I said before, the idea was good but I should have spent more time on it to make it a successful piece. Anyway, in the end, experience is experience and I'm happy with it.

These are good examples of how you can make very clear and strong gestures with considerably less poses. In a way, they show how important the golden (storytelling) poses are. They serve to a good purpose in terms of the messages they carry as well.

What a marvellous short:

Technically, there are some little problems with animation but I always put story, storytelling and creativity in front of technical perfectness and I believe that is what the artists should be after in the first place. So this is much more valuable to me than a short which has nearly perfect (can't be perfect in real terms, can it?) animation but a poor or cliche story.

I hadn't seen this until 2 months ago. I found it on aniboom as the most viewed and liked animation. It is kinda weird but I discovered aniboom pretty recently too. This is just a great game so be sure to not miss it. The designs, characters, puzzles, all are combined very creatively and artisticly which is very hard to find in games nowadays.

A very talented animator classmate, Bjarki introduced me with this studio's (Amanita) previous game: Samarost, which I loved at first sight. The puzzles were a little bit easy and the adventure was short comparing to Machinarium but the visuals and animations were just brilliant as well. This was the point I got interested in this studio's work. Machinarium is their first full-length game so be sure to support their effort if you liked the demo.

A very meaningful speech from Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Buddhist meditation master. Video is from the documentary movie: Zeitgeist.
The speech is quite powerful if you think deeply about it and try to get the real message. And I am not talking about fashionized and emptied "carpe diem" approach. I think, in this approach, people tried to be "seemed" as they were living the the moment fully (seemingly energized about everything, getting into different costumes, styles, trying to be different from the guy next door, getting -so called- personalized with the help of the goods they buy). Because they were doing it for the sake of doing it, in contrast, they were more like cloning themselves: creating people who use same set of behaviours, same looks, same way of thinking. People who care about packaging instead of actual important content. This was/is just not right.

Spirituality is a particular term which actually means dealing with intuition.
In the theistic tradition there is a notion of clinging into a word. A certain act is regarded as displeasing to a divine principles. A certain act is regarded as pleasing for the divine … whatever.
In the tradition of non-theoism, however, it is very direct — that the case history are not particularly important. What is actually important is here and now. Now is definitely now. we try to experience what is available there, on the spot. There is no point in thinking that a past did exist that we could have now.
This is now. This very moment. Nothing mystical, just now, very simple, straight forward. and from that nowness, however, arises a sense of intelligence always that you are constantly interacting with reality one by one. Spot by spot. Constantly. We actually experience fantastic precision, always.But we are threatened by the now so we jump to the past or the future. Paying attention to the materials that exist in our life — such rich life that we lead — all these choices takes place all the time, but none of them regarded as bad or good per say — everything we experience are unconditional experience. They don’t come along with a label saying ‘this is regarded as bad’, ‘this is good’. But we experience them but we don’t actually pay heed to them properly. we don’t actually regard that we are going somewhere. We regard that as a hassle. waiting to be dead. That is a problem. That is not trusting the nowness properly, that what is the actual experience now possesses a lot of powerful things. It is so powerful that we can’t face it. Therefore, we have to borrow from the past and invite the future all the time.
Maybe that’s why we seek religion.
Maybe that’s why we march in the street.
Maybe that’s why we complain to society.
Maybe that’s why we vote for the presidents.
It is quite ironic. Very funny indeed.

Drawing for Animation

I know some beginning 3d animators are not comfortable with drawing so I have decided to put this link, in case it helps anyone:

Of course it does not include everything about drawing for animation planning but it may give you a very good starting point.
I have been drawing caricatures and stuff since my childhood, but because I didn't have any formal training and didn't know anything about the concepts like posing, shapes, line-o-action, force, appeal, loose and simple drawing etc during that time, my drawings weren't effective and eye pleasing as they were meant to be. So I strongly encourage anyone who is starting animation, to check out these videos or lots of materials you can find on the web, to go through the books I gave link to (I carefully selected those), to attend some drawing lectures etc. Also, for an extensive learning resource, you may visit Jason Ryan's website:

You may think it is unnecessary since you are going to be 3d animator but what I've observed during my animation learning is, the better you are at drawing (remember even a stick figure can work if it is thoughtfully drawn) and the more you put those concepts into your planning drawings, the better, original and creative your animations will be. Otherwise, it will probably lead to live action like (rotoscope) animation, cliche animation or bad animation unless you are a 3d animation pro for lots of years, which is probably the hardest route to become an animator.

Double Fine

Ok, let's keep this thing going and alive! I have recently visited Stephen Gregory's blog . He has some nice tutorials and stuff, check it out. He is a former pixar animator, now working at Double Fine Studio with Tim Schafer. And who is Tim Schafer? Double Fine's head and one of the makers of superb old adventure titles like Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Full Throttle. Double Fine is also the producer of Psychonauts, a great adventure/rpg game! I didn't have the time to finish the game but it was one of the games that you genuinely feel that you are in a different world. There are very few titles that have this kind of effect on me. Anyways, I visited their site:

Welcome to the future - Class 3

Ok, I know this blog is going pretty dead. Hmm, maybe it is not my type of thing. I think I'm more of a visually oriented person than a textual(I don't know if this is the right word, but you get the idea:). So I am thinking about making this more of a sketch, video type blog about animation. (Ok you got me, I'm too lazy for writing somethin)

I said in my previous post that I will write about what I've learned during first class. Well, so much time has passed and I am now in class 3 so ask about class 2 please!:) Ok, the truth is, after a very hard, struggling class2 experience I see myself not at the level of teaching something. I am still working on my 3rd assign, animating a character with arms pushing some compactor/crusher walls. I finished working on the previous 2, so I hope it won't take too much time to post my reel2 here. Get to the point, What was wrong with those assigns? Ok, here is why:

-Moving everything around. I was using every control, putting torso rx here, hip ry there (to keep my character not dead, but it had to be done more subtlely) without much thinking about the physics or motivation behind that.
-I did not spare enough time to planning mostly for assign3. Can't say how crucial this is for animation. Without this you easily get lost inside the software, pulling pushing, tinkering with controls for hours. At the end, the result is headache, eyes turned into red and baaad animation.
-Not using video reference enough. Because I saw lots of examples around looking alike to their video reference, I thought it may be a good idea to find new movements, go more creative without video ref. Don't get me wrong, I am not against anyone doing that, during learning process this thing can get very helpful for understanding motion but you should pay attention to that when doing professional stuff. Because, as you know live action adaptation is boring to watch if it does not have a good story or very good acting to cover that. In summary, video ref. is essential when used for getting the basics, physics and then building your more exaggerated or cartoony, creative action or acting over it.
-Lastly I think I've complicated my shots a lot. All of my planned shots were over the frame limit and sometimes I could not let go off my ideas and tried to squeeze all of my action into that frame limit. Result; not readable&understandable pack of weird motions.
Even though I hate my mistakes, I feel that this is the best way to learn something. I think when you learn from your mistakes it always turns out to have more chance to be permanent in your brain.

Anyway, as you may have noticed there are lots of links at the right side. I transferred all of my browser favorites about animation to here. So if you want to learn animating on your own: I recommend reading these blogs & notes & books, watch videos (especially Keith Lango's and Jason Ryan’s), participate in 11secondclub contest, learn the tools and keep animating. Is there an easy way? Of course there is: Watch this guy’s movements and analyze them carefully. You will begin animating in seconds.

OK, time to post! I mean we have reached week 10 but my last message is from week 5. The reason behind this is right now I am having hard time to even submit my assignments on time (also generally not happy with the results) so what to post? Last post become a lie then? Partially yes, partially no because you know it isn't totally my fault, work? (inner voice:excuses, excuses, excuses-hey, you again?). Anyway during writing my last sentence, a funny thought came into my mind, which I will now use it as my topic. I won't talk about it much and it is this: People sometimes ask about what I'm dealing with or what will I do in future when I say I want to be an animator nearly all of them understands animator as "tourism animators" working in hotels who try to cheer up people, run fun activities etc. It is kinda like when my father says he is metallurgy engineer it is understood as meteorology engineer and then comes some silly questions like how is the weather? This shows how a certain job type is underrated or unknown in a certain population, showing that animation sector in Turkey is like non-existent at all. I hope it will change in near future but nowadays I think there is no real reason for a good animator to stay in Turkey unless he is too idealist(runs his studio), does not have enough resources or no risk-taker. Hmm, I think I made my goal public:)
Anyway,back to work, here are some stu poses which did not qualify to be submitted as assigns. In order(left to right):Devastated, strength, excited, devas2. In stu pose assigns, I generally try to avoid cartoon cliches(that have strong sense of certain emotions) and both achieve orginality and strong feel but I know I am not quite there yet.

Well, week 5. Going through last 3 weeks of am, I’ve just realized that I’m not pushing myself enough, do the best I could in my assignments. For the last two weeks, I’ve left my assignment for the weekend, as it was my hobby or something; playing video games(why valve has to make such great games: TF2, HL2:EP2, Portal), net surfing, etc. and during this time dealing with my assignment on and off. In addition to this, I spent most of my time calculating the position and time of ball using physics laws (I can’t help it, it’s an engineering habit) and forgetting that animation is an art form. In fact, I should have had fun animating the scene instead of bothering with technicalities. Besides when you leave your assign to Sunday, surely you get the least possible comments/feedbacks from mentors and your classmates, which is a very bad thing. I guess our greatest/ruthless enemy is again ourselves. Inner voice:h=1/2gt^2(shut up!). From now on, I’ll try my best. Although the results may turn out to be crappy, I’ll know that I’ve pushed myself to some limit. Henceforth, R.Williams’ famous saying will be my first priority principle: “Animation is CONCENTRATION”.

OK, time to post another message. Here are rough versions of my sketches (with line of action drawn) for session 102. I selected 7th one for my stu pose but I am not putting it up here. Instead from now on I will only put my extra work and progress reels to my blog which will save me from doing a lot of uploads:) Anyway, I know pose 1 is not good and realistic enough because I did not want to deal with rope tensions and I did not have enough time to refine it (time to go to bed:). The other one, pose 4 can also get better with some minor modifications. I found that when the poses involve sense of weight (like bag in 4) or forces affecting the body shape(1), posing becomes much harder than doing even very fancy looking, eye pleasing poses without noteworthy forces. So I should better work on those more.

In my humble opinion; an animator, at least a good one should have a very good eye for not only catching strong poses but also is able to capture movement (whether it is lively seen or is video reference) and do its analysis instantly in his mind. He must be creative, innovative, collaborative, flexible and most important of all dedicated to continuous improvement. In some people’s opinion in Turkey, these qualities are crap, animation or cartoons are nothing to be taken serious or a real business, it is childish, immature but we know these ignorant and “home of fixed idea” people, don’t we? and who cares about them? And for some people, to achieve these in a really all-time working environment and stay positive and healthy are very hard things to accomplish.

So, why one chooses animation? What is his/her driving force, motivation?

From the animator’s perspective of view, these qualities are not obstacles that need to be gained to reach the top; instead they see them as processes of their evolution, they gain them instinctually and as not duties or like but as parts of their lifestyle, enjoyment and enlightenment. And in the end, there is the biggest reward. Creating something from nothing, giving life, character, emotions to the dead material whether it is bits (0,1), lead on paper or bunch of photographs. For me, what equally attractive is telling stories right out of your imaginary world through animation. And animation is such a suitable medium for that. You don’t need fancy equipment, good actors asking for great deal of money or environment to be built. In most of the situations, a piece paper, a computer will be enough. You can have actors with limitless acting and movement capabilities and have environments only restricted by your imagination. Meanwhile, my animationmentor experience is officially began and I tell you man:) though only 4 days have passed, it has been quite out of ordinary and fabulous. I met my mentor, James Chiang who looks like a friendly and skillful guy. I look forward to working with him. Other things like tools, videos, people and interactivity were great too. I looked my classmates’ previous work and wow! some of them have a skill level in modeling, animation or graphics such that they can be considered as second mentors to me.

Enough snack talking and let’s get to the business then. I have read class 1 syllabus and decided to draw poses and pose stu (an am rig) according to them, in order to show emotions that are not given in assignments. First emotion is FRIGHTENED. One advice though: do not ever use a ballpoint pen(like me) for sketching.

Well, am I the luckiest person on Earth or what? Prior to my am experience, I got sick on Friday, having a not much painful sore throat and nothing else. But on Saturday, I was on fire with exhaustion, very very painful throat ache and headache. It reminded me a Ren&Stimpy episode where Ren gets sick and Stimpy nurses him. Ren was looking normal from distant but when the camera zooms in he was looking disgusting with every kind of loathsome thingies on his face. I was a bit in a mood like that. Now I am feeling better with medicine support and great care.

Anyway, I logged into the animationmentor site at 3 am today and it was open! I browsed through the options but since I was very tired, I didn't chat with my classmates or explore in detail. Now I can't log into the site because of the ongoing maintenance I guess. Please don't keep us waiting, AM staff.
Meanwhile I think I am going to optimize and upload my site. Sorry for my crappy writing, eventually it will get better (I hope).
